About ONOMA
Who We Are

ONOMA Community Outreach is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit street ministry based in downtown Paterson, NJ. Each week, ONOMA serves individuals experiencing homelessness by providing food, clothing, and other resources.

The name ONOMA comes from the Greek word for “name.” At the heart of the ministry is the simple belief that every person deserves to be known, loved, and treated with dignity. ONOMA’s mission is to show the love and compassion of Christ in a personal way, starting by learning each person’s name.
Our Story

ONOMA began with a growing conviction to put faith into action. Years before the ministry officially formed, founders Dean and Jen Laterra regularly volunteered with organizations serving the homeless in New York City. These experiences became a rhythm of life—week after week, showing up and building relationships with people living on the street.
When the pandemic disrupted much of that work, including the closure of the shelter where they had served for five years, the Laterras began praying and searching for new opportunities to serve closer to home in New Jersey.
In late 2022, with the help of a friend, they found a spot near the train station in Paterson where people gathered in need. They brought food and some coats—and then they came back. Over time, that simple, consistent presence evolved into what is now ONOMA Community Outreach.
Today, ONOMA serves hundreds of people each month with practical support and relational care. Through every sandwich, sleeping bag, and conversation, the goal remains the same: to reflect the heart of Christ and remind each person that they are seen, known, and loved.
